history
The market town appears in history around 1050; it developed around a pen, the church of which has been preserved. In May 1270, Bernard VII de la Tour granted city rights. The place gained more and more importance as a trading center in the Middle Ages; the Renaissance buildings are an expression of the prosperity of the 15th and 16th centuries. Today the place is the starting point for winter sports activities and in summer for hiking in the mountainous area.
On April 2, 1961, Besse was renamed Besse-en-Chandesse. On July 1, 1973, it was renamed again by merging with the place Saint-Anastaise to today's Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise. This designation has not yet fully established itself; Even in the most recent travel guides and on the Internet one can still often find the name Besse-en-Chandesse.
