The Puy de Sancy is at an altitude of 1885 m, the highest point in the French Massif Central , about 35 km southwest of Clermont-Ferrand in the Monts Dore mountain range . It is an extinct volcano that was active from the end of the Tertiary to 220,000 years ago.
You can reach the summit of the Puy de Sancy via hiking trails, but also via the Puy-de-Sancy cable cars (then another 20 minutes' walk).
The Massif Sancy is located in the Auvergne , a region that is rural and only very sparsely populated. Numerous volcanoes - above all the famous Puy de Dôme - give the landscape its special character. At the Puy de Sancy are the source streams of the Dordogne at an altitude of over 1600 m . The Super Besse ski station is located on the northern slope of the Puy de Sancy .
