Puy de Sancy cable cars
The cable cars on the Puy de Sancy are two parallel cable cars that were built in 1936/1937 and 1961 and lead from Mont-Dore to the Pic du Sancy (1780 m). The first cable car, built in 1936/1937, has a support, while the second lift has no support.
The latter is 1111 meters long and has two cabins, which were built in 1991. It is driven by a direct current motor with an output of 280 kW. The traction cables installed in 1998 have a diameter of 27.8 mm and the suspension cables installed in 2011 have a diameter of 48 mm. On December 22nd, 1965 there was a serious accident with 7 victims on this railway when it suddenly stopped in strong winds as a result of a power failure, whereby a cabin collided with a rock, was torn open and seven passengers fell out.
