Gelles belongs to the Arrondissement of Issoire and the canton of Orcines (until 2015: canton of Rochefort-Montagne ). The inhabitants are called Gellois .

Gelles is about 24 kilometers west of Clermont-Ferrand . Gelles is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Cisternes-la-Forêt in the north and north-west, Bromont-Lamothe in the north, Saint-Pierre-le-Chastel in the east and north-east, Olby in the east, Saint-Pierre-Roche in the east and south-east, Perpezat in the South, Heume-l'Église in the south and southwest and Prondines in the west.

The Miouze River runs along the eastern border of the municipality , where it also flows into the Sioule .
