history

The area of Arnoldstein was already settled in antiquity , which the Roman road on the left bank of the Gailitz still heralds today . This military road ran from Aquileia to Virunum .

The name is based on the presumed founder of the monastery castle, Arnold, who cannot be documented in a document. He built the castle on a rock above the Gailitz in the 11th century, which was subordinate to the Patriarchate Aquileia and from 1014 the diocese of Bamberg . Otto von Bamberg set up the Benedictine monastery here in 1106/07, which existed until 1783 (see also Arnoldstein Abbey ). The monastery castle is now accessible as an accessible ruin. In the park museum of the state capital Klagenfurt there is now an antique tombstone showing Knight Arnold with his wife Mathilde.

Below the monastery on the traffic route to Italy (“sloping passage”) a village was built, which was first mentioned in documents in 1376 and was also referred to as a market around 1500, but had no self-government with a privileged bourgeoisie. In the course of the 16th century it sank again to the village.

In the 15th century the Fuggers built a lead works ( Fuggerau ). In 1797 a (lead) smoothness factory was established in neighboring Gailitz , which later produced anti-rust paint and from 1814 to 1975 shotgun pellets, which is still evident today in a scrap tower . Arnoldstein became an industrial site from 1882 when a lead smelter of the Bleiberger Bergwerks Union was built here. The 100 meter high chimney is a reminder of this.

The Arnoldstein community was founded in 1850 and was given the right to use the designation market community in 1930 .

Population development

  • According to the 2001 census, Arnoldstein has 6,832 inhabitants, 91.9% of whom are Austrian citizens, 2.9% come from Bosnia and Herzegovina and 1.5% from Germany . 76.3% of the population profess the Roman Catholic , 9.8% the Evangelical Church and 3.5% are Islamic . 7.6% of the population have no religious beliefs.
  • As of January 1, 2016, the population was 7,027. According to nationality, 869 inhabitants (12.4%) do not have Austrian citizenship. According to the country of birth, 1005 inhabitants (14.3%) are not Austrians.

In the period from 1991 to 2001, both the birth balance and the migration balance were positive. From 2001 to 2011 the negative birth balance (–169) was compensated for by a strongly positive migration balance (+216).

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Arnoldstein, which was awarded to the market town on April 30, 1956, shows the motif of the oldest surviving seal of the monastery, which is preserved on documents from 1280 to 1509, even if this representation does not correspond to the - actually single-towered - church facade. The battlements are intended to remind of the castle as the predecessor of the monastery. The tinging was based on the colors of the Bamberg diocese , under whose rule the monastery was until 1759.

The blazon of the coat of arms reads:

“In a golden shield there appears a double-towered Romanesque church towering on a stylized mountain, all black, the church grooved in silver. The nave has a round arched gate pierced by a silver circle in the middle and a paw cross resting on a ball on its gable. The two towers are crowned with a crenellated crown with three visible battlements. "

The flag is yellow-black with an incorporated coat of arms.
