  • Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas : The parish church is a Gothic, later partially modified building on the north-western edge of the village. The first documentary mention comes from the year 1512. The three-storey vestibule tower with a baroque onion dome and lantern was completed in 1716.
  • Evangelical Church (Toleranzjubliäumskirche) west of the parish church was built from 1980 to 1981 and consecrated in 1981.
  • House Porcia in Gassen : The former nursing home was owned by the Counts of Porcia from 1662 to 1848, the seat of the keepers of the Afritz estate. The two-storey renaissance building with a former continuous transverse corridor on both storeys and a rafter roof truss covered with alpine roof tiles with crooked hips on both sides has cantilevered, open gable walls with decorated corridor parapets. The facades were created around 1785, but redesigned in the 19th century. The interior underwent major changes after 1956. Above the arched portal there is a coupled central window on the first floor, next to it the coat of arms of Prince Franz Seraphin von Porcia with an inscription, inscribed 1785. On the right, the coat of arms of his wife Barbara, Baroness von Jöchlingen. There is also a mural of Archangel Michael fighting Lucifer. In both basement rooms and on the ground floor (with the exception of the room in the south corner) there are barrel vaults with stitch caps.

Regular events

  • Kugelwölg´n : The Kugelwölg´n is a custom that is common in a similar form in other Carinthian communities (there as ball throwing, heeling or ball whale). In this game, which is held annually in Afritz on Easter Monday , two equipped teams try to knock over the “Krasl” (a stick that stands on three legs, a kind of tripod) with a fist-sized ball. Each hit earns one point, the Krasl is placed in a different place, and each team continues to play from the place where the ball last landed. You start from an inn, then cross-country to the next inn.

Economy and Infrastructure

According to the 2001 census of workplaces, there are 54 workplaces with 172 employees in the municipality as well as 474 out-commuters and 78 in-commuters. There are 68 agricultural and forestry holdings (25 of which are the main occupation), which together manage 2,181 hectares (1999). Economically dominant is the tourism at Afritzer See. The transport connection is via Millstätter Straße (B 98).

coat of arms

Afritz was awarded the coat of arms of the Princes Porcia , the long-standing court lords and landlords, with an Aquarius as a shield holder in 1960 and was initially out of use when it was merged with Feld am See in 1973, but became the new one a year later - without the Aquarius holding the shield Constituted large community Feld am See awarded.

Today's Afritz coat of arms was given to the community in the course of re-independence on September 18, 1992. It is still based on the shield of the Princes of Porcia, but the number of lilies was reduced to five and these were arranged in two rows. In addition, the heart-lily ornament was added as a local component, it is modeled on the baptismal frieze of the Afritz parish church.
