history

The first documentary mention of Nötsch is from 1253.

In Nötsch im Gailtal there have always been major floods that often affected the entire valley. The earthquake of January 25, 1348 triggered a landslide on the Dobratsch , which caused the Gail to be dammed and destroyed numerous buildings. Further floods of the Gail in 1848 and 1851 also had devastating consequences, including many bridges.

With the constitution of the political communities in Carinthia in 1850, the local community Emmersdorf was formed. It was renamed Nötsch im Gailtal in 1960. In 1999 the municipality received the right to use the designation “ market municipality ”.

In 1924 the parishes of St. Paul an der Gail / Šentpavel na Zilji were Slovene, as was the parish of Vorderberg / Blače and, in the bilingual parish of Sankt Georgen / Šentjurij, the subsidiary churches of Emmersdorf / Smerče Kerschdorf / Črešnje and Tratten / Pešišče were only run in Slovene. The Saak / Čače parish was run in two languages. Only the branch church in Schloss Wasserleonburg was run in German.

In 1989 a robbery excavation at the Laas-Riegel near Förk resulted in a Celtic weapon consecration find from the Latène period . This was then illegally entered into the Swiss art trade. Two thirds of the find was bought by the RGZM and the remaining third by the private collector Axel Guttmann . After the circumstances of the find became known, the State Museum of Carinthia acquired both parts of the find complex.

politics

The municipal council of Nötsch has 19 members and has been composed as follows since the municipal council election in 2015 :

The directly elected mayor is Alfred Altersberger (ÖVP).

coat of arms

The motif of the coat of arms of Nötsch has the oldest surviving seal of an owner of the Wasserleonburg. This is a Cholo de Lewenburg (Löwenburg), which was first mentioned in a document in 1250 and whose seal can be found on a document from 1258. The upright lion, walking to the right and looking to the right, is certainly related to the name of the castle, although a reference to the bishopric of Bamberg as the original feudal lord is likely.

The coat of arms and flag were awarded to the community on June 15, 1960, the flag is yellow-blue with an incorporated coat of arms.
