Franz Wiegele (painter)
Franz Wiegele (born February 23, 1887 in Nötsch im Gailtal in Carinthia , † December 17, 1944 in his birthplace ) was an Austrian painter .
He visited in Klagenfurt , the junior high school . From 1907 to 1911 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna . There he not only got to know Anton Kolig ; with Sebastian Isepp , Anton Faistauer , Egon Schiele and Albert Paris Gütersloh , he first appeared in public in 1909 at an exhibition in Vienna.
In 1911, his work Akt im Wald aroused the indignation of the heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand at an exhibition by the Hagenbund . In 1912 Wiegele and others received a scholarship to study in Paris . After traveling a few times during the First World War, on an adventurous hiking tour through the Sahara from Sebdou to Laghouat, he was taken prisoner by the French . In 1916 he was released to Switzerland . Until 1925 he worked in Zurich , where in 1919 his main work "Die Grüne" was created. In 1925 he returned to Nötsch.
After exhibitions in Switzerland, he participated in exhibitions in Pittsburgh , Brussels and Venice .
Wiegele was one of the pioneers of modern painting in Austria with his portraits and female nude paintings.
He died in a bombing raid in his studio in Nötsch on December 17, 1944 ; many of his works were destroyed.
In 1954 Wiegelestrasse in Vienna - Liesing was named after him. In 1998, the Nötscher district established a museum in his parents' house .
