history

The area valley was not settled until the High Middle Ages . The name area was first mentioned in a document in 1308. The sunny side of the valley was cleared and settled by around 1300, the village of Rauth was long the most important settlement. Its name is derived from the clearing activities of the early settlers who belonged to the German-speaking population, cf. "Reuten" = make arable by removing trees and shrubs. This is confirmed by the name "Laßnitzer" for a settlement in this village. This name has the same origin: it and its spelling variants such as Lassnitz etc. come from the Slavic and means a stream that comes from a forest or a cleared area (meadow, meadow, etc.).

Feld am See did not come into being until the 18th century, especially after the construction of the Protestant church in 1787. Haus Brenn (a schnapps distillery and tavern) that was built in 1632 also gave the lake its name. The elementary school was built in 1851. Summer traffic began as early as the end of the 19th century, initially at Lake Brennsee, which brought about a decisive change in the traditional smallholder economic and settlement structure.

The municipality of Feld was constituted in 1850 and was renamed Feld am See in 1931. Between 1973 and 1990 the communities of Afritz and Feld am See were merged, but were separated again after a referendum.

coat of arms

Feld am See was awarded a coat of arms in 1954, which had the legend of the Mirnock giant as a motif, but did not correspond to the heraldic rules. With the reconstitution of the municipality in 1973 (incorporation of Afritz), the previous municipal coat of arms was taken over, but without the sign holding Aquarius. After the two municipalities separated in 1991, the municipality renounced the old coat of arms in favor of a new design. The new coat of arms and flag were awarded on September 30, 1993.

The outwardly inclined pairs of ears of the coat of arms symbolize a field and the five wavy threads in the base of the shield symbolize a lake. Both components represent the most important economic sectors in the municipality, agriculture and tourism. The official blazon of the coat of arms reads:

"In green over a golden corrugated shield base with five green wavy threads crisscrossed, two interlaced pairs of grain stalks with ears sloping outward."

The flag is green and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.
