The Ferndorf community was constituted for the first time in 1850, but was joined to the market community of Paternion in 1865 and was not re-established until 1906. Through 1955, 1964 (KG Gschriet of the dissolved municipality of Mooswald ) and 1973 (parts of the dissolved municipality of Molzbichl ), the area of the municipality increased due to the assignment of territories and the dissolution of neighboring communities.
The municipality, which has always been characterized by agriculture, gained economic importance through the Heraklith plant , which was built by Magnesit AG in Radenthein and put into operation in 1923; since then, lightweight panels made of magnesite-bonded wood wool have been manufactured here. The plant increased the population from 407 to 1862 between 1906 and 1961.
