Heraklith is a brand of wood wool lightweight panels (abbreviated as HWL panels) from the Austrian manufacturer Knauf Insulation GmbH (formerly Heraklith GmbH ). The company, headquartered in Fürnitz in Carinthia , has been part of the German company Knauf since 2006 and has been operating under the uniform name Knauf Insulation GmbH in Germany and Austria since December 2007 . However, the Heraklith brand name continues to be used for the wood wool insulation panels made by the company.
Heraklith wood wool panels mainly consist of the insulation material wood wool and the mineral binders cement or magnesite . They have been used for decades in the areas of thermal insulation , fire protection and sound insulation and are among the high-quality, natural insulation materials . Due to their external appearance, Heraklith plates are also jokingly called sauerkraut plates.
history
The word Heraklith is derived from the words Hercules (Greek 'Heracles') and lithos (ancient Greek 'stone'); this was intended to convey the durability and reliability of the material.
In 1907, the Viennese Robert Scherer registered with the Imperial and Royal Patent Office the Austrian patent for a process for the production of a fire-safe, light, porous material . Soon after the first use in 1914, the mixture was replaced by industrially manufactured prefabricated wall parts, which were produced under the name Heraklith. With the introduction of hot gas hardening of material slate, the product range was expanded and the company expanded worldwide.
Heraklith's production capacity increased significantly in the 1950s along with the growth in construction activity in Europe . In the mid-1960s Heraklith sold around 17 million square meters of HWL panels in Germany. In 2006 Heraklith GmbH was taken over by Knauf Insulation GmbH. Heraklith will remain the trade name for the HWL panels, the product range will be expanded and strengthened.
properties
Wood wool lightweight panels are dimensionally stable and very strong. They have moderate thermal insulation properties, but a good heat storage capacity. Wood wool lightweight panels can also be used very well in sound insulation (plastered) or sound absorption (unplastered). They have a good ability to regulate humidity and are considered flame retardant (fire protection class B1). HWL panels are used primarily as a plaster base for ceiling or roof soffits and for fire and sound insulation. Since they are available in different colors, they can also be used as design elements.
Environmental aspects
For some time it was suspected that Heraklith plates contained asbestos and could therefore be harmful to health and must be disposed of separately. However, asbestos was never added to the manufacture of Heraklithic plates. In individual cases, an increased content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was found in the wood wool lightweight panels . The reason for this is probably the use of scrap wood such as railway sleepers as raw material.
Types
- Heraklith
- The Heraklith plate consists of wood wool and mineral binders, mainly cement or magnesite. It is used for thermal insulation in buildings and for industrial applications, as a plaster base and as a ceiling panel for soundproofing. Stronger plates there with groove and spring , thinner with shiplap .
- Tectalan
- Wood wool multilayer board with rock wool core for sound and heat insulation.
- Heratekta
- Non-flammable wood wool multilayer board with a polystyrene core for thermal insulation.
