Knauf Insulation produces and sells insulation materials made of glass and rock wool , wood wool ( Heraklith ). The company's insulation materials are used in residential and commercial construction as well as for industrial applications to improve thermal insulation , soundproofing and fire protection .
The insulation manufacturer is part of the German, family-owned Knauf Group , whose companies are predominantly in the building materials industry . The Heraklith brand , which has been known for wood wool products since 1908, has belonged to Knauf Insulation GmbH since 2006 .
The Knauf Insulation Group employs around 5,000 people in over 35 countries and operates 40 plants in 15 countries (as of March 2018). In Germany there are around 750 employees. The German production sites are located in Simbach am Inn (headquarters of the German company Knauf Insulation GmbH), Sankt Egidien and Bernburg .
Company history
Knauf Fiber Glas USA was founded in 1978 with the purchase of the existing plant in Shelbyville , Indiana, by the Knauf family. In 2001 Knauf acquired the European business of Owens Corning through a joint venture with Alcopor , in 2002 Knauf took over the company Alcopor completely and thereby gained the majority of the European business of Owens Corning. The company was renamed Knauf Insulation . In 2006, Knauf Insulation took over the Heraklith Group companies.
ECOSE Technology
In 2009, the company presented ECOSE Technology, the first formaldehyde-free binding agent for mineral wool to date . Unlike conventional binders, it is not based on phenol - formaldehyde resin , but on natural organic raw materials. In the same year it was introduced in the entire glass wool production. Since the changeover, the company's glass wool insulation materials are no longer yellow, but brown. The color is created naturally when the binder hardens.
Awards and certificates
In 2009, the company was awarded the innovation prize of the specialist trade cooperation Eurobaustoff for ECOSE Technology .
The company was the first in the world to be awarded the Indoor Air Comfort Gold certificate from Eurofins. The seal, which was awarded in 2010 for the company's uncoated glass wool insulation materials, shows that the products meet all European criteria for indoor air quality.
The company's uncoated glass wool insulation materials, Heraklith wood wool panels, Tektalan and Heratekta multilayer panels for indoor applications, underground garages and basement ceilings, as well as Supafil bulk insulation materials, bear the Blue Angel for zero emissions.
The wood wool insulation boards are PEFC certified.
