Owens Corning is the world's largest manufacturer of fiber optics and related products.
history
The company was founded in 1935 from a partnership between the American glassworks Corning and Owens-Illinois . The spin-off took place on November 1, 1938. In connection with claims for damages in over 243,000 cases by asbestos victims, the company had to apply for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2000 ; this ended in October 2006. By 2011, more than $ 361 million had been paid in asbestos-related lawsuits. In 2002 Owens Corning sold the majority of the European subsidiary Alcopor to the German Knauf Group.
Owens Corning has been dyeing its glass wool pink since 1956 . The color was registered as a trademark in 1985. The pink panther serves as an advertising mascot.
