history

In 1903, the trained glassblower Michael Joseph Owens invented the first automatic bottle blowing machine . This invention led on the one hand to the establishment of the Owens Bottle Company in the same year, on the other hand it revolutionized the glass industry.

In 1929 Owens merged with the Illinois Glass Company to form the Owens-Illinois Glass Company. 1938, founded Corning joint venture Owens Corning .

In 1965 the name was changed to Owens-Illinois, Inc. to accommodate the company's entry into the production of plastic packaging. Owens-Illinois was part of the Dow Jones Index from June 1, 1959 to March 12, 1987 . The company's stock suffered severe setbacks following lawsuits for the improper use of asbestos processed and sold by Owens Corning from 1953 to 1957.

In 1959, the Owens-Illinois Glass Company, based in Toledo (Ohio), took over 50.1 percent of the shares in Gerresheimer Glashüttenwerke and in 1971 took over a 75 percent majority in Gerresheimer Glas AG , based in Düsseldorf.

Until the end of July 2007, the company was also represented in plastic packaging worldwide with locations in North America, South America, Australia, Europe and Asia. The OI plastic group was then sold to Rexam .

In 2004 Owens-Illinois took over the French BSN Glasspack and with it several German glassworks a. a. in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim and in Holzminden. In August 2005 the Düsseldorf glassworks, which had existed since 1864, was closed.

On November 20, 2008, the group announced that it would cut production in Holzminden with 360 employees by a third due to low demand. A glass melting tank is also to be shut down at the production sites in France and Spain .

On November 7, 2012, the group announced the closure of the Achern production site.
