Michael Joseph Owens (born January 1, 1859 in Mason County , West Virginia, † December 27, 1923 ) was an American inventor.

Owens was the son of a miner. From the age of 10 he worked as a glassmaker's assistant in Wheeling . His invention of the automatic glass blowing machine , which he presented in 1903, caused a worldwide sensation . Owen's machine changed the appearance of the entire hollow glass industry in the years that followed . The US glass manufacturer Owens-Illinois is named after him.
