Storm surge world "Blanker Hans"

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The storm surge world "Blanker Hans" was a permanent museum, experience-oriented exhibition that dealt with storm surges in Büsum on the North Sea . It opened in 2006.

The exhibition was located in the Büsum port area in a wave-shaped building and tried to convey the experience of a storm surge with all of the senses.

The program consisted of a tour with the so-called “ rescue capsule ” from the restaurant “Zum Deichgrafen ” located in the building , which is modeled on a pub during the storm surge in 1962 , through instructive so-called “event stations” to a museum exhibition. The subject areas of the exhibition were tides , weather , climate , dyke construction , coastal protection , disaster control and the historical storm surges on the North Sea coast .

At the beginning of the 2011 season, a large special exhibition “Pirates - Sailing under the Black Flag” was opened. This interactive exhibition presented the everyday life of pirates in the early 18th century as well as the current threat posed by “modern” piracy.

On June 30, 2015, the Büsum municipal council decided that the exhibition would be closed on December 31, 2015. Since the opening in 2006, the planned visitor numbers of 200,000 per year on average have only been reached by about a third and losses totaling around 6.5 million euros have been accumulated. The last day of the exhibition was November 1st, 2015. In June 2017, a Science Center was opened in the building .
