Perrysburg is a city in Wood County in the US state of Ohio , along the Maumee River near Toledo .

history

The history of Perrysburg is linked to Fort Meigs, the largest log fort in North America

The city's history begins with the construction of Fort Meigs under General William Henry Harrison . Harrison had been a wing adjutant under General Anthony Wayne , who built Fort Greenville further south in Ohio from 1793 to 1794 . Fort Meigs was built in the course of the clashes with the British and the Indian tribes under Tecumseh in the British-American War . It was named after the then Ohio governor Return Jonathan Meigs .

The location of Fort Meig on a rock above the Maumee River seemed favorable, which was also confirmed in two disputes with the British over the fort. The plans came from the Army engineer Captain Eleazer D. Wood , after whom the county around Fort Wood County was named.

Early settlers who fled to the Huron area before the war returned to the shelter of the fort and settled on the plain in front of Fort Meigs. Perrysburg was measured and planned in 1816. The city prides itself on being the only one besides Washington, DC planned by the federal government. Soon it became a center of shipbuilding and trade.

When a cholera epidemic broke out in the summer of 1854 , the city had to be evacuated for two months. 100 people died from this disease.

Residents

According to the 2000 census , the city had 16,945 inhabitants. When combined with the adjacent Perrysburg Township , it would have a total population of 33,945, making it the most populous city in Wood County.
