Il Barone Rampante

Il Barone Rampante was an Italian racing team, which in the years 1991 bis 1993 at the Formula 3000 Championship International participated.

Formula 3000

The team was founded by Giuseppe Cipriani , a racing driver and co-owner of the luxury hotel and restaurant group "Cipriani". The name of the racing team refers to the novel Il barone rampante (literally: "The career-conscious baron"; German book title: " The baron on the trees ") by the Italian writer Italo Calvino . The team only used Reynard chassis ; the engines came from Mugen - Honda , Judd and Cosworth .

Formula 3000 season 1991

In the debut season, Il Barone Rampante started with two Reynard chassis and Honda engines. Regular drivers were Alessandro Zanardi and Giuseppe Bugatti , who took part in all ten championship races. Zanardi won the team's first race in Vallelunga and a summer race in Mugello , plus four fourth places in Circuito de Jerez , Brands Hatch , Spa and Nogaro . Two races before the end of the season, Zanardi led the intermediate standings, but ultimately had to admit defeat to Christian Fittipaldi , who won the championship in the Pacific team's Reynard in the last race. Zanardi was runner-up in the 1991 season with 42 points. Giuseppe Bugatti was only twice in the points during the entire season: he finished third in Hockenheim and fifth at the season opener in Vallelunga. He finished the championship in eleventh place.

Formula 3000 season 1992

In its second season, Il Barone Rampante used three chassis, which in turn were obtained from Reynard. The team started with engines from Judd. Two vehicles were switched to Cosworth engines in the summer, while the third car was operated with the Judd eight-cylinder engine.
The team saw a number of driver changes over the course of the season. Regular driver was Rubens Barrichello . He took part in every race of the year and was third in the championship with 27 points. The second car was initially used for Andrea Montermini , who moved to Forti Corse after the sixth race as a result of a dispute over the financing of his cockpit . His replacement was the Portuguese Pedro Chaves , who had previously driven for the British competing team GJ Motorsport . With Il Barone Rampante, Montermini only crossed the finish line twice: he won in Montmélo and came third in the subsequent race in Enna , Sicily . After moving to Forti, he won two more races and ultimately finished the season as runner-up. Montermini's replacement Chaves did not make it into the points in his four appearances for Il Barone Rampante. The third car, exclusively equipped with a Judd engine, was driven in succession by Fabiano Vandone and Gianpiero Simoni . Simoni scored a championship point in the last race of the year at Magny-Cours , Vandone only crossed the finish line outside of the points.

1993 Formula 3000 season

In the third season, Il Barone Rampante again fielded three cars. The team ended the season prematurely, however, after significant financial difficulties in the spring. The third car was discontinued after the fourth race and the second after the fifth race. For the sixth championship run, Il Barone Rampante only appeared with one car; after that, the team ceased operations completely.
The first car was entered for five races. The driver was the Frenchman Eric Angelvy , who missed the qualification once and retired prematurely in all four races he competed in. The second car was driven by Jan Lammers from the Netherlands . He started in the first six races and, apart from the last race, regularly crossed the finish line, but did not get any points. The third car was entered four times for Vittorio Zoboli . missed the qualification once, dropped out twice due to a driving error and once - in the second race of the year at Silverstone - crossed the finish line in 12th place.

formula 1

During 1991, team boss Cipriani developed various concepts for the promotion of his racing team to Formula 1 . Initially he considered taking over the Formula 1 project from Adrian Reynard , which had failed at the beginning of the year due to insufficient funding and the lack of an engine partner. This connection did not materialize; Reynard's Formula 1 project was instead revived by Pacific Racing two years later . In October 1991, Cipriani had the Argentine racing car designer Enrique Scalabroni develop a concept for his own Formula 1 car; this idea was ultimately not realized either. After the end of the 1991 Formula 1 season , Cipriani negotiated with Ken Tyrrell to take over the Tyrrell Racing Organization . According to some media reports, the negotiations were well advanced, but failed because of different price expectations. Later, Cipriani tried to take over the Italian Formula 1 team Fondmetal ; ultimately nothing came of that either.
