Arriach is a municipality with 1,333 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Villach-Land district in the Austrian state of Carinthia .

Arriach is a legally recognized climatic health resort .

geography

Arriach is located on the southeastern foothills of the so-called Nock region of the Gurktal Alps in a valley between Wöllaner Nock ( 2145  m ) in the north and Gerlitzen ( 1909  m ) in the south. About 20 km south of Arriach is Villach , about 24 km east of Feldkirchen .

history

Arriach was first mentioned in documents as Ovriach in 1207 , but the first settlement should have taken place around the year 1000.

In 1850, the tax and cadastral communities Arriach and Laastadt merged to form the community Arriach. The localities of Sauerwald and Hinterbuchholz split off from the municipality of Treffen in 1898 and were added to the Arriach municipality. Innerteuchen initially belonged to the community of Himmelberg and came to Arriach in 1920.

According to the 2001 census, the municipality of Arriach had 1,562 inhabitants, 97.6% of whom were Austrian and 1.2% German citizens. To the evangelical church to 68.8% of the community population known to Roman Catholic 26.0%. 3.2% described themselves as non-denominational. This makes Arriach the municipality in Carinthia with the second highest proportion of Protestant believers.

The community is a member of the Kärntner Holzstraße and has a varied range of well-preserved wooden houses in traditional style. Efforts are being made to preserve the old construction for posterity.

Economy and Infrastructure

Traditionally, livestock was predominant in today's municipality, today tourism plays an important economic role. However, the majority of those in employment in Arriach commute, especially to Villach.

According to the 2001 census of workplaces, there were 48 workplaces in Arriach with 178 employees in the municipality as well as 440 out-commuters and 69 in-commuters.

The Arriacher crest reflects the wine chalice symbolizing the Last Supper and the monogram of Christ and the Luther Rose the relatively high proportion of people with Protestant creed resist. The municipality's coat of arms and flag were awarded on May 19, 1971.

The blazon of the coat of arms reads:

"In a green shield there is a golden communion chalice, the lower half of which is decorated with Alpine flowers, with a golden monogram of Christ on the front and a golden Luther rose at the back, which is formed from five heart leaves and contains a black Latin cross in its heart-shaped chalice."

The flag is green and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.

Partner municipality

A partnership with Wain in Baden-Württemberg has existed since 1972 . According to Wain, around 300 Protestants from Arriach had fled the Counter Reformation from 1651 .
