The (Silken) Windsprite or Longhaired Whippet , as it is occasionally called, is a dog breed from the USA that is not recognized by the FCI . The breed is recognized by the Kennel Clubs of FCI members in the Czech Republic , Slovakia and Hungary , the name Silken Windsprite and the translation of the word long-haired whippet are used in the first place. In the US, the breed has been known as the Wind Sprite since January 1, 2017 ; some growers in Europe use the name Silken Windsprite . The association for the German dog industry recognized the Silken Windsprite at national level in 2014, it is looked after by the German greyhound breeding and racing association DWZRV . In scientific (outdated) linguistic usage, the breed is referred to as Longhaired Whippet or Longhair Whippet .

Similar to the Longhaired Whippet is the larger Silken Windhound , created by crossing between (longhair) Whippet and Borzoi , which until 1998 was also jokingly referred to as Silken Windsprite by the breeder Francie Stull .

history

Between the years 1955-1975, long-haired dogs increasingly appeared in the American Whippet kennel Windsprite owned by Walter A. Wheeler Jr. These were initially registered as pure-bred whippets by the responsible umbrella organization, the AKC . However, the American Whippet Club (AWC) carried out an investigation in 1982, which came to the conclusion that the long-haired dogs were created by crossing Shelties , as the MDR1 defect could be detected in them, which does not occur in Whippets. As a result, the long-haired dogs registered as Whippets were removed from the stud book by the AKC and have since been considered mixed breeds from the point of view of the AKC and AWC .

Even before his dogs were removed from the AKC's stud book, Wheeler founded the Longhaired Whippet Association (LWA) together with like-minded people in 1981 , which published a standard in 1986. The first dogs came to Europe in 1987. In 1987, a breeder in the USA crossed some Longhaired Whippets into her Borzoi lines. This new breed was first named Silken Windsprite by her until she was forbidden to use this name by the LWA. In 1998 this breed got the name Silken Windhound .

In 1993 a US breeder bought six Longhaired Whippets from the LWA and thus formed the basis for the later establishment of the International Longhaired Whippet Club (ILWC). In the mid-1990s, due to a too small gene pool, non-AKC-registered whippets were introduced into this breed. In 2001 the International Longhaired Whippet Club was officially founded. The breed standard of the ILWC differs slightly from the breed standard of the LWA.

In 2002 a breeder imported several dogs acquired from ILWC breeders to Germany. In 2004 the Silken Windsprite Club (SWC) was founded. The SWC uses the name "Silken Windsprite" for the breed. The dimensions of the German translation of the ILWC breed standard differ slightly from the original ILWC.

description

The Silken Windsprite is an athletic greyhound with a medium-length coat. It is bred in two varieties: normal (45.7–55.9 centimeters) and miniature ( ILWC under 47.0 centimeters). Its appearance conveys elegance and grace as well as strength and speed. The flowing line over the head, neck and back to the gentle lumbar arch is elegant. The lower line is characterized by a deep chest and a very slim waist. The top and bottom lines are balanced by the long, angled hindquarters and the graceful swing of the tail. Any color and any drawing are permitted.

His nature is friendly and balanced. He enjoys movement, running freely and in a sporty environment.

Health

Due to the crossbreeding of Shelties, the MDR1 defect occurs in the breed. The allele frequency in a sample of 89 dogs was 46.1 percent. Of the dogs examined, 51.7 percent were heterozygous for the defective allele , and 15.7 percent had two defective alleles. In addition, cases of Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) have been described, which can probably also be explained on the basis of the breed's genetic history.
