The Silken Windhound is not from the FCI recognized dog breed in the United States belonging to the greyhounds is counted. It is a relatively new breed that emerged from crosses between Borzoi , Whippets and Longhaired Whippets . The first litter fell in 1987. In Europe, this breed was recognized by the Slovenian Kennel Club in 2003 and assigned to Group 10, Section 1 . The breed can be in Slovenia on national and international exhibitions are shown and acquire the National Champion title, the award of the CACIB , however, is not permitted. The Silken Windhound has also been recognized by the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA) since 2009 .

history

The Silken Windhound is based on a cross between Longhaired Whippets, Whippets and Borzois, which the first breeder originally referred to as the Silken Windsprite . Windsprite was, however, also the breed name of the first breeder of the Longhaired Whippet, so that the use of this name as part of the breed name of the new breed was legally prohibited. In 1998 the name was changed to Silken Windhound . In the German-speaking world, the name Silken Windsprite is used today by some breeders for the Longhaired Whippet.

The Silken Windhound is a small to medium-sized greyhound with a moderately long coat that resembles a small borzoi. The shoulder height is 47 to 60 cm. Shoulder height and body length form approximately a square. All colors and badges are allowed.

Health

Due to the crossbreeding of Shelties , which took place in the Longhaired Whippet, the MDR1 defect also occurs in the Silken Windhound. The allele frequency in a sample of 84 dogs was 17.9%. 33.3% of the dogs examined were heterozygous for the defective allele and 1.2% had two defective alleles.

The Silken Windhound is being studied as an example of a new breed of dog by the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at UC Davis as part of the Silken Windhound Genome Project .
