The Metropolis House (Spanish Edificio Metrópolis ) was the former headquarters of a Spanish insurance company at the intersection of Calle de Alcalá and Gran Vía in Madrid , Spain .

In 1905, the insurance company La Unión y el Fénix decided to build a new company headquarters after the decision was made to build the Gran Via boulevard. An architectural competition between Spanish and French architects was announced, which the brothers Jules Février and Raymond Février won.

Work began in 1907 with the demolition of seven old houses to make way for the new building. The Spanish architect Luis Esteve finalized the work in 1910 and the opening ceremony took place on January 21, 1911.

The finely structured facade and the tower with the dome stand out. There was originally a phoenix on top of the dome until another insurance company called Metropolis bought the building in 1972 and removed the phoenix in favor of a winged Victoria . The Victoria was designed by Federico Coullaut Valera .
