Church of the Four Evangelists (Arriach)
The Four Evangelist Church in Arriach , which can accommodate around 650 people, is the largest Protestant church building in Carinthia.
history
The first tolerance community in Carinthia was formed in Arriach after the tolerance patent was issued. The importance of this evangelical community is shown by the fact that Arriach was the seat of the Vienna superintendent from 1895 to 1903 . Josef Winkler, the pastor at the time, was responsible for all Protestants in Vienna, Lower Austria, Styria and Carinthia.
A first wooden house of prayer was built in 1781. This was replaced by a stone building in 1785, which was on the site of today's fire station until 1912 . Johann Colombo built today's church from 1903 to 1907.
Building description
The church is a west-west, neo-Gothic building with a retracted choir and two-tiered buttresses . The tower, crowned with a pyramid helmet, is slightly presented to the east facade. A ribbed vault rises above the four-bay nave, and a star- ribbed vault above the polygonal choir . The stencil paintings in the choir were restored in 1982.
Facility
The present facility was built in 1907. The altar , pulpit and baptismal font were made by the Julius Assmann Art Institute in Lüdenscheid . The altar with sacrificial portals bears an altarpiece with the risen Christ, surrounded by the four evangelists . This copy of Fra Bartolomeo's painting was made by J. Plammer in 1907. The organ was built by Karl Neußer, the stalls were made by Josef Kerschbaumer.
