The construction of the Kronprinz Rudolf-Bahn (today Ossiachersee-Traverse of the Südbahn ) in 1865 marked the beginning of tourism on Ossiacher See, which completely changed the traditional agricultural structure of the area in the course of the 20th century.

The municipality of Steindorf was constituted in 1850, and the municipality of Glanhofen with four cadastral municipalities was separated from the very extensive municipality in 1894 and renamed Ossiach . In 1986 the community name of Steindorf received the addition "am Ossiacher See".

Coat of arms Steindorf am Ossiacher See.svg

The blue background of the Steindorf coat of arms, which was awarded to the municipality on June 10, 1977, refers to the location on the third largest lake in Carinthia, the golden Dreiberg alludes to the first syllable of the word Steindorf. The golden catfish is a parallel to the three trout from the opposite municipality of Ossiach; this fish is more common in the eastern part of the lake.

The official blazon of the coat of arms reads:

"A golden catfish (catfish) in a blue sign over a golden three-mountain."

The flag is blue and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.
