history
The villages of Deblach, Gramilach and Tauchendorf were first mentioned in a document in 993, and Glanegg Castle (today a castle above the Glantal valley that had been saved from decay) in 1121. At that time the castle was owned by the Carinthian Duke Heinrich III. from the Eppenstein family , after his death it went to his godchild, Count Bernhard von Trixen . Margrave Ottokar III became his heir . von Steyr , whose son later became Duke of Styria . From then on, the castle was administered by Styrian ministerials who called themselves Lords of Glanegg.
In 1424, Glanegg came into sovereign possession and served various noble families as the seat of power and regional court until the end of feudal rule in 1848.
When the communities in Carinthia were constituted in 1850, three small communities, Maria Feicht, Tauchendorf and Glanegg, were formed, which were only merged into today's community of Glanegg in 1956 and 1957, respectively. However, a joint mayor's office had existed since 1939.

According to the 2001 census, Glanegg has 2027 inhabitants, 96.8% of whom are Austrian citizens. 88.2% of the population profess to the Roman Catholic Church , 6.2% to the Evangelical Church and 0.8% are of the Islamic faith. 4.0% of the population are without religious beliefs.
Culture and sights
Buildings
- Glanegg castle ruins
- The parish church of St. Gandolf in the village of the same name was acquired by the Eppensteiners between 1060 and 1076 through an exchange deal with the diocese of Salzburg . St. Gandolf received full parish rights between 1285 and 1293. The church stands on a hill and is surrounded by a cemetery with a defensive wall. The church building was presumably given its current Gothic style as early as the 14th century.
- The current branch church of St. Maria in Maria Feicht was first mentioned in a document between 1060 and 1076 as "ecclesia in Fuihta". It was initially the Eppensteiner's own church with parish rights, but later sank into a branch of St. Gandolf . It was rebuilt in the first quarter of the 16th century as a Marian pilgrimage church in the late Gothic style.
- The parish church of St. George in Friedlach was mentioned in a document in 1169 as a parish and 1214–1218 as a church.
- Filial church St. Michael in Tauchendorf
- Filial church of St. Lorenz in Flatschach
Regular events
The annual four-mountain run also leads through the municipality of Glanegg. Today's route leads from Zweikirchen over the Glantalboden over to Sankt Leonhard, up the Kulm and through a piece of forest up to Liemberg at the foot of the Vitusberg. However, there are several indications that the route of the corridor walkway was some time ago west of Zweikirchen via the Hardegg castle ruins, the Haidensee, Tauchendorf, Gramilach, Mauer and the Wasai church to Liemberg.
Economy and Infrastructure
Glanegg is connected to the neighboring communities of Feldkirchen and Liebenfels via the Ossiacher Straße (B 94) leading through the Glantal . A state road branches off to the south at toll bridges.
With the stations Tauchendorf-Haidensee, Glanegg and Mautbrücken there are three stops on the St. Veit / Glan - Villach railway line (former Rudolfsbahn ) in the municipality .

coat of arms
The inside shield of the coat of arms shows the golden lion of the Lords of Glanegg, but the background has been changed from blue to red. The two oak leaves facing outwards from the corners of this inland shield symbolize the Friedloseiche, the old court tree from Friedlach, the three spruce branches in the lower edge allude to the origin of the name Maria Feicht (originally Fuihta ) from the spruce.
The coat of arms and the flag were awarded to the municipality of Glanegg on June 22, 1993. The official blazon of the coat of arms reads:
- "A golden lion with a knocked-out tongue in a red shield with a gold border, in which two green oak leaves grow diagonally from the corners of the inner shield, and in the lower edge of which there are three green spruce branches."
The flag is red and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.
