The Glanegg castle ruins are located in the middle of the Glan valley in the municipality of Glanegg in the state of Carinthia in Austria .

Glanegg Castle is the third largest fortification in Carinthia after Hochosterwitz Castle and Landskron Castle .

Construction

The imposing, extensive fortress originally had the task of controlling the passage through the Glantal. The building consists of various architectural elements, ranging from the Romanesque period to the Renaissance . The core is the Romanesque keep , equipped with a signal window. The huge round tower protecting the entrance is striking . The castle began to fall into disrepair in the middle of the 19th century, although the castle was supposedly still inhabited until then.

history

Glanegg Castle is first mentioned in a document in 1121; The first owner was the Carinthian Duke Heinrich III. from the noble family of Eppenstein . After his death in 1122, his nephew, Count Bernhard von Spanheim, inherited the castle. This also bequeathed it to a nephew, the Margrave Ottokar III. from Steyr ; after his death in 1192, his son, Duke Ottokar IV , left the castle to Leopold V. For the next few decades, many other aristocrats called Glanegg Castle their own.

1473-1478 was the Turkish invasions and the Glantal threatened, but it was possible the Turks not to take the castle. After three more owners prevailed in 1534 King Ferdinand I of the castle, but he had to mortgage as a result of high debt Ulrich II. Ernau from left, who converted the castle into a palace. In 1588 his heirs came into full possession of Glanegg Castle. After the Ernauern and the Carinthian family of the Seenuhs, the castle came to Count Stampfer in 1713, who had the first road built through the Glantal. During the Sixth Coalition War , the castle was once again put into defense readiness in 1813, but there were no acts of war.

In 1818 court judge Hirzegger von Ossiach bought the castle, whose daughter Josefine married a Mr. Klinzer and brought Glanegg Castle into the marriage as a marriage asset.

As a drawing from 1850 shows, the castle was still completely intact at the time. It only began to decline after 1860, when it belonged to the wine merchant and mayor of Bregenz , Anton Kinz: Due to the roof tax introduced by Emperor Joseph II at the end of the 18th century, he had the roofs of the castle removed and all wooden parts removed. Apparently, part of the complex was still inhabited towards the end of the 19th century.

Today the ruin is owned by the Zwillink families. In 1996 the municipality of Glanegg leased the castle for a period of 25 years and handed it over to the "Burgverein Glanegg" for revitalization.
