Evidence of a settlement around 800 BC was found. Walled in by various finds such as barrows, inscription stones and swords in the crown hall of the castle.

In 878 there was a documentary mention of a donation of the property to the Bavarian Altötting monastery . In 1028 Count Ozzi or his foundation Ossiach became the landlord and a castle was built under the Counts of Sternberg . In 1330 the rule was sold to the Counts of Ortenburg . Landskron was first mentioned in a document on July 25, 1351 .

In 1355 there was a change to the Habsburgs and in 1392 it was pledged to the Count of Cilli . In 1423 Andreas von Graben zu Sommeregg was named as the Cillic burgrave on Landskron. 1436–1447 the castle belonged to the Lords of Stubenberg . In 1511 it was donated to the Order of St. George by Emperor Maximilian I. In 1542 after the fire of the castle, no reconstruction took place.

In 1542 Christoph Khevenhüller acquired the castle. From 1543 on, the family had the title "von Landskron", and the castle was considered the ancestral seat of the Khevenhüller family. The castle was expanded under the Khevenhüllers; Around 1600 Landskron was a splendid renaissance mansion and had a double curtain wall with seven towers. It was considered a center of social life in the country. In 1552 Emperor Karl V visited it. After the confiscation of the castle in the course of the expropriation of the Protestant nobility in 1628, it was acquired by Count Dietrichstein in 1639 .

Due to its exposed location, there were several fires as a result of lightning strikes (early 16th century, 1542, 1585 and 1812). After the last fire, the roof was no longer repaired and the building was left to decay.

In 1914 the watch tower collapsed. In 1953 it was revitalized by Hans Maresch , one of the largest forest owners in the Rosental . Today the castle is used for tourism.
