Ernst Bacher (art historian)

Ernst Bacher (born November 14, 1935 in St. Veit an der Glan ; † April 28, 2005 ) was an Austrian art historian and curator .

Life

Ernst Bacher attended schools in Carinthia and from 1955 studied painting in Vienna . In 1959 he graduated as an art teacher with a minor in history. Bacher continued his studies, now art history, and from 1960 worked at the Federal Monuments Office . In 1967 Bacher did his doctorate and in 1978 he completed his habilitation at the University of Vienna . He lectured at the Institute for Art History at the University of Vienna and at the academies for fine and applied arts.

In the Federal Monuments Office he worked at the Institute for Austrian Art Research , founded in 1911 by Max Dvorák , later called the Department for Inventory and Monument Research . In 1979 he took over the management of the institute temporarily and in 1981. Bacher was involved in all scientific tasks, in particular with the publications of the Dehio manuals on the art monuments of Austria, the Austrian art topographies and the Corpus series on glass painting and wall painting .

In 1981 Bacher was appointed director of the International Comité Technique des Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi in recognition of his expertise in medieval glass painting at home and abroad . Also in 1981 Bacher was elected to the commission for art history at the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

From 1982 to 2000, Bacher was general curator of the Federal Monuments Office, a position that was newly created in 1982. Bacher saw himself as the successor to Alois Riegl , who was general curator in the monarchy, and was active in the new publication of Riegl's works. Bacher was involved in two amendments to the Monument Protection Act , in 1990 and 1999. From 1982 to 2002 Bacher was President of the International Council on Monuments and Sites in Austria. In both functions, the main agenda was monument protection and preservation, from the 1990s also with the focus on provenance research .
