geography
The valley is about 40 km long. It extends from the Drauschleife near Rosegg in the west to the mouth of the Vellach in the east. In the north it is bounded by the mountain range of the Sattnitz , in the south by the mountain range of the Karawanken . Downstream the valley merges into the Jauntal . In the west-east direction it is crossed by a tectonic seam, the so-called periadriatic seam . The Rosental is part of the settlement area of the Carinthian Slovenes .
Middle Rosental with a view of the Ferlacher Horn
The Rosental is relatively densely populated. The largest towns are:
- Rosegg
- Ferlach
- Köttmannsdorf
- Feistritz in the Rosental
- Sankt Jakob im Rosental
- Sankt Margareten im Rosental
- Finkenstein am Faaker See
- Gallicia
history
The name of the valley is derived from the Romanic field name Rasa , which was first mentioned in a document in 876 and was located in the municipality of today's Rosegg. The Lords of Ras and von Rasek built Altrosegg Castle on the Rosegg Castle Hill . From 1227 the name Rastal was used for the entire Upper Rosental .
railroad
The ÖBB currently operate the route ( coming from Klagenfurt via Maria Rain ) from Weizelsdorf to Rosenbach state border on the Rosentalbahn .
The Rosental steam trains are a special feature during the summer months. There is also scheduled traffic for St. Nicholas and Christmas. From the village of Weizelsdorf you drive in old NBiK wagons , pulled by a steam locomotive, to Ferlach , where a visit to the Historama Transport Museum is on the program.
Others
As a pleasure region, the Rosental Carnica Biene is a member of the Austria pleasure region , the honey from the Carinthian bees , which traditionally occur here , has also been included in the register of traditional foods . However, publications by the Carinthian Carnica breeder Hans Peschetz show that the Rosental bee differs significantly from the Carnica Carinthian bee due to the influence of the Italian bees.
