The Vellach ( Slov .: Bela ) is a tributary of the Drava in Lower Carinthia .
geography
It rises in the Steiner Alps and flows through, always facing north, first of all the mountainous Vellach valley , which coincides with the municipality of Eisenkappel-Vellach , between the Steiner Alps, Petzen and Obirmassiv . After the village of Rechberg, it leaves its narrow valley and enters the Jaun valley , only to rise after a short distance near Gallizien in the Drau.
population
In Jaun- and Vellachtal, German gained a foothold relatively late, and even today a considerable part of the population speaks po domačem , namely Jauntalerisch or in the Vellachtal the Obirmundart. In German, the relatively uniform Central Carinthian dialect is used.
economy
The Vellachtal is still agricultural today. In the past, iron and lead mining played a certain role and there were smaller industrial companies. Today tourism is the most important branch of the economy ( Obir stalactite caves , spa tourism ( Bad Vellach ), mountain tourism). With the Seeberg and Paulitschsattel , the valley has two border crossings to Slovenia , the latter being of little importance.
