The Petzen ( Slovenian Peca ) is a mountain range of the Karawanken in the border area between Carinthia and Slovenia , south of the city of Bleiburg . It culminates in the Kordeschkopf ( 2126  m above sea level , Slovene Kordeževa glava ), the easternmost two-thousand- meter peak of the Karawanken and the entire Southern Limestone Alps .

geography

In the north, the massif extends far into Austrian territory to Jaunfeld , where it reaches almost 1750  m . A. , whose normal route from the southern Slovenian side reaches the summit in an easy hike. This normal route is also accessible from Austria via the Kniepssattel .

The Petzen still carries the following peaks over 2000 m

  • Knieps ( Koncnikov vrh ), 2110  m above sea level A. , right on the border

and entirely in Carinthia

  • Feistritzer top ( Bistriska spica ), also called Hochpetzen , 2113  m above sea level. A.
  • Wackendorferspitze ( Veska kopa ), 2079  m above sea level A.

Origin of the name, history

Bleiburg and the Petzen

The name "Petzen" is said to be derived from an Old High German woman's name. Presumably, however , it corresponds to the Slovenian word peč , German borrowed from Pötsche , “rock” or “cave”, corresponding to “ oven ”.

According to legends, the leader of an army of the dead once walked around the Petzenstock. Inside the mountain, King Matthias Corvinus and his loyal followers are said to be waiting for a world battle, a legend of the Rapture of the Mountains similar to Emperor Barbarossa in Kyffhäuser in Thuringia or Charlemagne in Untersberg in Salzburg. Matthias Corvinus was King of Hungary from 1458 to 1490 and the opponent of Friedrich III . A ten year conflict led to the occupation of parts of Carinthia by Hungary .

Management

Mining

Lead - zinc mineralization occurs in the mountain , which was mined on the Austrian side until the early 20th century.

On the Slovenian side, lead mining began as early as 1700 and mining was carried out intensively until 1994. A total of 1000 km of tunnels were dug into the mountain. 5 kilometers of these tunnels were made usable for mountain bike tourism, but most of them are no longer used.

The Petzen is a popular excursion area in both summer and winter. From Feistritz ob Bleiburg you can take the Petzen cable car (manufacturer Doppelmayr , 6 people per cabin) to the heart of the area at an altitude of 1705  m .
