Manfred Posch

Manfred Posch (born February 18, 1943 in Vienna ; † July 1, 2016 ) was an Austrian journalist , writer , mountain writer, alpinist and amateur astronomer .

Life

Manfred Posch was part of the editorial team of the Carinthian daily newspaper and its forerunner newspaper Die neue Zeit from 1964 to December 2006 . The journalist and book author was in charge of the culture, features and Carinthia departments, among other things. He was deputy editor-in-chief and editor-in-chief for the last five years of his professional life. As head of the Klagenfurt observatory and chairman of the Carinthian Astronomical Association, Posch made a name for himself in the field of adult education. Posch emerged as a writer and journalist with poetry and prose as well as with numerous publications on the musical landscape of Carinthia , astronomy and the Alps.

Posch was also considered a long-time journalistic sponsor of the Hohe Tauern National Park , in which he undertook hundreds of tours. The Karawanken were part of his “mountain home” . The highest elevation of the Karawanken, the 2,237-meter high chair , had (by 2010) climbed Posch 76 times.

Manfred Posch was married. Together with his wife Ilse, he raised four children. In 2007 he enrolled at the University of Klagenfurt , where he initially began studying liberals . From 2008 Posch studied education , psychology and philosophy as a full student at the Carinthian Alpen-Adria-Universität . From 2008 he acted as chairman of the jury of the “Carinthian Poetry Prize”, in which Büchner Prize winner Josef Winkler appears.

Journalistic work

Manfred Posch published numerous scientific publications and was culture editor and specialist journalist for medical topics. For many years he was the author of the mountaineering section Higher out in the “Kärntner Tageszeitung”. From 1973 he published the magazine Sternenwelt (contributions to astronomical research). From 1986 Manfred Posch worked as deputy editor-in-chief of the Kärntner Tageszeitung, and in 2001 he was appointed editor-in-chief. For years he was giving lectures beyond Carinthia.

Alpine ventures

He developed his mountaineering activity in large areas of the Alps, especially in the Hohe Tauern in Salzburg, Carinthia and East Tyrol, in the Gurktal Alps (Nock Mountains) and in the Julian Alps . On the occasion of solar eclipse excursions, he climbed Kilimanjaro twice and Elbrus . In 1981 he stood on the summit of the Mexican volcano Popocatépetl .

Awards

In 2006 Posch received two awards for his life's work, which also includes books on music, literature and the mountains: The Republic of Austria awarded him the title of Professor and Carinthia the Great Golden Decoration of Honor of the State of Carinthia .

In 2007 Manfred Posch was honored by Diocesan Bishop Alois Schwarz with the papal award Knight of the Order of the Holy Pope Silvester .

For Posch's services to popularizing astronomy, the asteroid 1991 RC 3 was named after him on June 15, 2011 . He bears the name (32821) Posch . The name was given by the Minor Planet Center of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The proposal to name the asteroid discovered at the Karl Schwarzschild Observatory (Thuringian State Observatory ) by the astronomers Lutz D. Schmadel and Freimut Börngen in 1991 RC3 after Posch was made by the emeritus director of the Astronomical Institute of the University of Graz , Hermann Haupt. (32821) Posch runs around the sun within the asteroid belt between the planets Mars and Jupiter . The celestial body is believed to be between four and six kilometers in size.

In 2015 Posch's latest book, a haiku poetry volume, came out. Illustration: Gabriele Russwurm-Biró. The work was presented in the Klagenfurt Star Theater, which has been technically updated. In the same year Manfred Posch became a member of the PEN Club .
