The Kärntner Tageszeitung ( KTZ ) was an Austrian daily newspaper that appeared in Klagenfurt between 1946 and 2014 .

history

The KTZ was founded in autumn 1945 by the SPÖ-Carinthia under the name Neue Zeit as a licensed newspaper . It was published as a weekly newspaper until January 1946. In 1965 it was renamed the Kärntner Tageszeitung .

Until December 2009 it was 100% owned by the SPÖ . Mediaprint was responsible for managing the advertising space and subscribers . In January 2010 the SPÖ ceded 55% of its shares. This led to a restructuring. Editor-in-chief Ralf Mosser and managing director Bernhard Wernig then each held 22.5%, while BB & Partner Vermögens- und Liegenschafts GmbH with owner Hansjörg Berger took on a further 10%. Subscription and advertising sales have again been managed by the KTZ itself since this restructuring.

In October 2010 BB & Partner Vermögens- und Liegenschafts GmbH took over the 90% shares of Bernhard Wernig, Ralf Mosser and the SPÖ Kärnten. Since then, the KTZ has been independent and non-party again. The KTZ also had six regional external editorial offices for the areas of Lower Carinthia, Upper Carinthia, Klagenfurt City and Country, Villach City and Country, Central Carinthia and the Gail, Gitsch and Lesach valleys. It was the last Carinthian daily newspaper that was not owned by media groups. The Carinthian media house was founded by the new owner and published both the KTZ, the Blitzlichtrevue and the Carinthian journals (formerly KTZ district journals). The Carinthian journals were distributed free of charge to all Carinthian households on glossy paper. Since April 16, 2010, local Carinthian journals have been published for the Villach city and country districts and for Wolfsberg. In September and October 2010, the Kärnten Journals were also implemented in the districts of Klagenfurt city and country, and shortly afterwards in the Gail, Gitsch and Lesach valleys, Central Carinthia and Spittal an der Drau. In total, the Carinthian journals were published with a total print run of 220,000 printed copies. The KTZ was a cooperative member of the Austria Press Agency .

On January 24, 2013 it became known that the entrepreneur Dietmar Wassermann had taken over 75% of the Kärntner Tageszeitung . The previous sole owner Hansjörg Berger held the remaining 25%.

Due to bankruptcy, the last issue of the newspaper was published on February 28, 2014.

The bankruptcy is the subject of investigations by the Klagenfurt public prosecutor's office. It is investigated against several people on suspicion of infidelity, fraudulent Krida and fraud. One of them is ex-owner Dietmar Wassermann, who was on the run from the authorities from 2014 to 2017. He went into hiding in January 2014 because the German judiciary wanted to arrest him. Aquarius is accused of large-scale tax fraud in a cause that has nothing to do with the KTZ. The alleged damage amounts to 3.8 million euros. Wassermann, who has always denied the allegations, was arrested in one of his homes in Gmünd in Carinthia in October 2017 .

The former KTZ sole owner Hansjörg Berger was sentenced to 17 months of conditional imprisonment at the Klagenfurt Regional Court in August 2015. He had helped an employee of the then Carinthian FPK politician Uwe Scheuch to transfer state funds with excessive bills from his companies at the time to the party or Scheuch.

Concept and edition

Since September 2011, the KTZ has had special themed pages that appear once a week and deal with the following areas: Mondays: Carinthian sport , Tuesdays: Carinthia's regions , Wednesdays: Enjoyment and life , Thursdays living and living , Fridays: Motor and life , Saturdays: business and success , Sundays: travel and life .

In this media analysis, the KTZ was able to achieve an increase of 10,000 readers after years of declining readers. Mediaprint took care of printing and distribution.
