Eugen Freund (born April 15, 1951 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian journalist ( ORF ) and politician ( SPÖ ). From 2014 to 2019 he was a member of the European Parliament .

Life

At the age of six weeks, Freund moved with his parents to Carinthia , where his father took up a position as a community doctor in Sankt Kanzian am Klopeiner See in the mixed-language area . After graduating from school in Klagenfurt in 1970, various unfinished courses (medicine, history, theater studies) followed at the University of Vienna. In 1972 he made his first journalistic attempts in connection with the street sign dispute . The first articles appeared in the Kärntner Tageszeitung . After that, Freund worked as a freelancer for the Austrian news magazine profil for two years .

In 1974 he switched to the internal political editorial team of ORF radio, in 1978 the then Foreign Minister Willibald Pahr brought him to his ministry as press spokesman. In the following year, Freund moved to New York , where he tried to reposition Austria's image in the USA in the press and information service of the Republic of Austria under Peter Marboe . He held this position until 1984. When he returned to Vienna, he worked as a freelance journalist and filmmaker for a year and a half and held courses at the journalism institutes of the University of Vienna and the University of Salzburg .

From 1986 to 2013 he was with ORF television. He moderated the news program ZIB 2 in 1986/87, he worked in the domestic political editorial department from 1987 to 1989, and from 1989 to 1995 he worked as a contributor and presenter for the ORF information program Auslandsreport . In 1995 and 1998–2001 he was employed by the ORF as a correspondent and office manager in Washington, DC . Immediately before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , Eugen Freund returned to Austria from the USA and published his first book Mein Amerika in the same year .

From 2004 to 2007, Freund worked in the foreign affairs department of the radio. In June 2007 he returned to television and worked as a special correspondent and analyst on foreign policy events. Since January 2010 he has also moderated the world journal . In the course of his international journalistic activities with articles for newspapers and magazines, Eugen Freund also worked as a speaker with a focus on the USA, as a moderator (English, German) of political discussions and as an occasional host of opera matinees in the Klagenfurt City Theater . In December 2008, Eugen Freund was named the “ best foreign journalist of the year ” by the jurors of the journal Journalist , published by the Federal Board of Directors of the German Association of Journalists .

As a substitute for Gerald Groß , he moderated ZIB 17 from the beginning of May to August 2011 and, together with Hannelore Veit, the daily main ZIB at 7:30 p.m. After Groß left ORF at the end of September 2011, he became its successor. On December 31, 2013, he hosted the time in the picture for the last time before he left the ORF. Freund had been retired from ORF at the age of 62 against his will.

On December 2, 2013, he was awarded the professional title of Professor .

In January 2014 it was announced that Eugen Freund would top the list of the SPÖ in the 2014 EU parliamentary elections . In October 2014, he joined the SPÖ after his non-party membership was criticized by SP organizations. During his work in the EU Parliament and mainly in the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Security and Defense Subcommittee, Freund repeatedly emphasized the need for a strong, common EU foreign policy. After the European elections in Austria in 2019 , he left the European Parliament.

Eugen Freund is married and has a daughter and a son.
