Distribution of seats according to parliamentary groups

The 2014 European elections in Austria took place on May 25, 2014 as part of the 2014 EU- wide European elections . In Austria, 18 of the 751 seats in the European Parliament were allocated.

initial situation

In the 2009 European elections , the two governing parties, the SPÖ and ÖVP, suffered losses. The ÖVP became the strongest party. Originally, Austria had 17 seats, after the enlargement of the parliament following the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon in 2011, Austria received two more seats. The accession of Croatia reduced the number to 18 seats from the 8th electoral term (2014-2019).

In the 2013 National Council election , the grand coalition was confirmed despite the loss of votes. At the same time, two new parties came into parliament, the Stronach team and NEOS , while the Alliance for the Future of Austria missed its re-entry into the National Council.

Suffrage

In the European elections in Austria, all persons who have Austrian citizenship and a place of residence in Austria, Austrian citizens without a place of residence in Austria and non-Austrian Union citizens with their main place of residence in Austria are entitled to vote. In addition, those entitled to vote must be at least 16 years of age on the day of the election and be entered in the voter register / European voter register of an Austrian municipality on the reference date. In the European elections, all those persons who are entitled to vote themselves and who have reached the age of 18 on election day have the right to stand for election.

There is an explicit threshold clause of four percent. However, due to the seat allocation used according to the D'Hondt procedure , winning a mandate is only certain from a vote share of 5.27%.

Candidacies

In order to stand for election, campaigning groups had to submit the supporting signature of a member of the European Parliament, three members of the National Council or 2600 eligible voters. Candidates had to be submitted by April 10th. The federal electoral authority decided on the final approval and ranking on April 23. The following lists were allowed:

The Stronach (TS) team, represented in the National Council , announced on April 8, 2014 that it would not run for the EU election. The Monarchists - Black and Yellow Alliance (SGA) collected support signatures, but could not produce the required number.
