The Movement for a Europe of Freedom and Democracy (English Movement for a Europe of Liberties and Democracy , French Mouvement pour l'Europe des libertés et de la démocratie , MELD) was a political party at European level . It was officially recognized by the European Parliament from 2012 to 2015 . Its member parties were to be classified as right-wing conservative , right-wing populist , sovereignist or nationalist and Eurosceptic .

The party was affiliated with the Foundation for a Europe of Liberties and Democracy (FELD) , which was also financially supported by the EU . Both organizations were based in Paris , France.

history

founding

The MELD was founded on August 17th, 2011 from the ranks of the Europe of Freedom and Democracy (EFD) group, but without the participation of the largest party, the British UK Independence Party . In 2012, the party was granted party funding of EUR 621,482 for the first time by the European Parliament . In mid-2013, 23 of the 35 members of the EFD belonged to MELD.

European elections 2014

At the end of 2013, Lega Nord left MELD to work with the parties of the European Alliance for Freedom . In the 2014 European elections , many of the MELD members failed to get into parliament. Only Dansk Folkeparti and Perussuomalaiset , who switched to the EKR faction, managed to get back. The Tvarka ir teisingumas also moved into parliament again. It remained in the EFD group, now under the name EFDD , and took part in the establishment of the European party Alliance for Direct Democracy in Europe in September 2014 .

Financial irregularities and dissolution

In autumn 2015, allegations became known that funds from MELD and the FELD Foundation were used illegally in 2013 and 2015 for the municipal election campaigns and national campaigns of the Danish People's Party (DF). The allegations were made by DF MEP Rikke Karlsson , who accused MELD chairman Morten Messerschmidt of lack of transparency regarding the finances of MELD and FELD. Karlsson later resigned from the DF because of this. In October 2015, the European Parliament asked MELD and FELD to return around 150,000 euros of misused grants. The party still refused to disclose the expenditure.

In July 2015, Messerschmidt, MELD treasurer Anders Vistisen , also a DF European parliamentarian, and a third person founded a new European party called Alternative for Europe (AfE). Several individual members of the MELD joined the AfE in the course of the year, as a result of which, in the opinion of the European Parliament, the MELD no longer fulfilled the requirements for European parties, parliamentarians from seven member countries. Therefore, the funding of MELD for 2015 was frozen by the European Parliament. For 2016, in contrast to the new AfE, MELD no longer submitted an application for funding from the European Parliament.

At the end of October, the DF announced that it would withdraw from MELD and AfE and not participate in any European party at least for 2016. AFE's chairman was the Bulgarian VMRO MP Angel Jambaski , the party's only MEP. Recognition of the AfE was rejected by the European Parliament after Jambaski also left the party. The Finnish member party Perussuomalaiset switched to the AEKR in November 2015 .

In September 2016, the European Parliament granted MELD € 43,689 in funding for 2015, originally MELD applied for € 425,460. In November 2016, accusations were raised against the member party Solidarna Polska (SP), according to which the SP had misused MELD funds for national politics. In some cases, money was also billed for services that never took place.

Board

The founding chairman was the Greek Niki Tzavela (LAOS). She resigned at the beginning of 2014 and Jacek Włosowicz (SP) took over the post on a provisional basis. In 2015 Morten Messerschmidt (DF) became the new chairman.
