Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 ( DiEM25 for short , German Movement Democracy in Europe 2025 ) is a left - wing pan-European movement that, according to its own statements, aims to “shape the 21st century justly”.

DiEM25 was presented on February 9, 2016 by the former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis in the Volksbühne Berlin . DiEM25 sees a democratic deficit in the European Union and therefore strives for the democratization of Europe. The movement's manifesto is entitled “Democratize Europe! Europe will be democratized or it will fall apart! "

DiEM25 organized the European Spring alliance for the 2019 European elections . In Greece , DiEM25 narrowly failed with 2.99% of the votes due to the 3% blocking clause, in Germany the party as a democracy in Europe - DiEM25 received 0.3% of the votes and, like in all other countries, remained without a parliamentary seat.

In the parliamentary elections in Greece in 2019 , the Greek electoral wing MeRA25 moved into parliament with 3.44% of the vote with nine members.

Program

According to its “Manifesto for the Democratization of Europe”, DiEM25 sees itself as a pan-European network of the 21st century and is not a political party in the traditional sense.

DiEM25 is committed to democratically controlled and intensified European integration , but complains that “an alliance of short-sighted politicians, economically naive officials and incompetent financial experts” has “slavishly subjected the project to the demands of financial and industrial conglomerates”. However, relapsing into nation-state action is the wrong way to go, rather the “true democratization” of the European institutions is an expedient solution.

DiEM25 calls for decisive reforms in its 8-pillar program. For example, the first pillar, which can be implemented quickly, is intended to bring transparency and more democratic control by the citizens into the EU's centers of power. Among other things, the European Council and the euro finance ministers group are to stream their meetings live on the Internet and all documents on TTIP are to be published.

The long-term goal is, after the implementation of an adequately financed EU-wide economic program (500 billion euros per year) and the resulting economic upswing - a pan-European Green New Deal , Pillar No. 3 - to approve the integration of the EU even in the previously disadvantaged Population groups to increase. According to this, the European Constitution (Pillar No. 6) targeted for 2025 can make the future of the EU more integrated and democratic, as the vast majority of EU citizens will then also have material evidence of the EU's advantages and future orientation.

Elective wing

In 2017, national electoral parties, known internally as the “electoral wing”, were discussed in detail and decided by means of a Europe-wide vote ( I-voting ) to run for the 2019 European elections. Since, according to current EU rules, pan-European parties cannot stand for candidates across Europe, but only separately in the individual nations, national electoral parties had to be founded by the local activists. For example, a Greek DiEM party called Mera25 was founded on March 26, 2018, the German DiEM25 party was founded on June 2, 2018, others followed in Belgium, France and Italy. The election wing should make it possible to maintain the character of a political movement and still be able to participate in the political process in the form of elections.

MeRA25 (Greece)

The Greek electoral wing Μέτωπο Ευρωπαϊκής Ρεαλιστικής Ανυπακοής Ανυπακοής , short ΜέΡΑ25 or MeRA25, in German about European Realistic Disobedience Front was founded on March 27, 2018. The Greek word μέρα (mera) means day and thus represents the Latin word for diem, here.

MEP Sofia Sakorafa , previously Syriza, joined the party in December 2018 . In the 2019 European elections , MeRA25 failed with 2.99% as close as possible to the three percent hurdle. In the general election just six weeks later, Yanis Varoufakis was the top candidate. With 3.44% of the vote, MeRA25 entered parliament with nine members.

Democracy in Europe (Germany)

The German election wing Democracy in Europe - DiEM25 was founded on June 2, 2018 in Frankfurt am Main . Jasper Finkeldey became the founding chairman. At the general meeting on November 24, 2018, Finkeldey and Laura Müller were elected joint chairmen.

For the European elections , the electoral wing took part as an Other Political Association . The top candidate was Yanis Varoufakis, followed in second place by Daniela Platsch from the Austrian party Wandel . The candidacy was supported by the Democracy in Movement (DiB) and courage parties , with individual members of DiB running on the list. 130,072 votes were cast on the list, which corresponds to 0.3% of the votes. The entry into the European Parliament was not achieved.

People and Organization

At the beginning of May 2019, the movement had 116,000 registered members, according to its own website. At the founding event in 2016, alongside Yanis Varoufakis, Katja Kipping , Hans-Jürgen Urban and politicians from the Spanish party Podemos appeared. With the exception of Varoufakis, these have now withdrawn. Other well-known active members include:

Coordinating collective and advisory committee

At the beginning of October 2016, a twelve-person coordinating collective was elected. a. Yanis Varoufakis, Noam Chomsky, Brian Eno, Thomas Seibert. The task of the collective is to develop quick political reactions. The Advisory Committee, also elected, consists of 26 people.

German Federal Committee

There has been a German federal committee since November 2017. The democratically elected committee within the movement is to represent the interests of DiEM at the national level. The federal committee has nine members who are elected for a term of office from 2019 to 2021: Jan Lübben, Janina Urban, Vincent Welsch, Sören Altstadt, Steve Freytag, David Schwertgen, Jakob Mohr, Korbinian Nida-Rümelin and Samuel Küppers.

DiEM25 Spontaneous Collectives

DiEM25 Spontaneous Collective, or DSC for short, is the name for small self-organized groups within DiEM25. There are both regionally and thematically organized DSCs. These groups form the basis of the movement and act largely autonomously in their self-image. Official statements made by DSCs to the outside world are democratically harmonized across Europe by means of votes. There are over 100 regionally organized local groups in many cities and regions in 26 countries and over 10 thematic pan-European DSCs.

European Spring electoral alliance

In November 2017, DiEM25 decided in a pan-European membership vote to take part in the 2019 European elections . For this purpose, national parties or electoral associations were founded, which DiEM25 calls the election wing. DiEM25 also entered into partnerships with existing parties. With these, the pan-European electoral alliance European Spring was founded.

Partner parties of the European Spring were:

Democrazia e Autonomia, Luigi de Magistris' party , broke with DiEM25 in late 2018. The French small party Nouvelle Donne joined the European Spring at the end of 2018 and planned a joint list with Génération.s; At the beginning of 2019, however, she allied herself with Raphaël Glucksmann's Place publique movement .
