The 2019 European elections in Poland took place on May 26, 2019 as part of the 2019 EU- wide European elections . This was the fourth election since Poland joined the EU in 2004.

Initially, 51 seats in the European Parliament were awarded, but 52 members were elected. A mandate holder from Poland will move into the European Parliament after the United Kingdom has left the EU .

Starting position

On February 25, 2019, President Andrzej Duda signed a resolution that set deadlines and dates with the attached election calendar and at the same time marked the beginning of the election campaign.

Election committees that stand for election had to be formed, registered and approved by April 6 or 8, 2019, the prerequisite for this was the timely submission of the supporters' signatures.

Could compete:

  • political parties (Komitet wyborczy, KW)
  • Coalitions of political parties (Koalicyjny komitet wyborczy, KKW)
  • Groups of voters (Komitet wyborczy wyborców, KWW)

National or regional committees were allowed to run in one or more of the constituencies. A threshold of 5% applied to all .

The deadline for submitting the lists of candidates ended on April 16.

Constituencies

For the elections to the EU Parliament, Poland was divided into the following 13 constituencies:

Law and justice

As in the presidential, parliamentary and local government elections, the ruling party PiS ran together with the parties Solidarna Polska (EKR) and Porozumienie (EKR) led by Jaroslaw Gowins . In the previous EU election, all three competed separately.

European coalition

Most of the EU-friendly parliamentary opposition parties joined together under the name of the European Coalition (Koalicja Europejska PO PSL SLD .N Zieloni). The main parties of the alliance were:

The following other parties were also involved: Teraz! , Unia Europejskich Demokratieów , Stronnictwo Demokratyczne ( EDP ), Socjaldemokracja Polska (S&D), Wolność i Równość and the former right-wing extremist League Polskich Rodzin . The coalition was supported by the Obrony Demokracji Comitet .

Konfederacja KORWiN Braun Liroy Narodowcy

Much of the committee openly endorsed the Polexit or did not rule it out. The alliance of radical EU skeptics was formed at the turn of the year 2018/19. At first these were the nationalists of the Ruch Narodowy and the paleolibertaries of the KORWiN party . This was followed by the reactionary director Grzegorz Braun , the pro-life activist Kaja Godek and the formerly anti-clerical rapper Piotr Liroy-Marzec . The parties Federacja dla Rzeczypospolitej by Marek Jakubiak and Partia Kierowców joined in March and April respectively.

Kukiz'15

The UPR , Prawica RP , as well as the former presidential candidate of DB Pawel Tanajno ran for the list of the Kukiz movement .

Lewica Razem - Razem, Unia Pracy, RSS

There were negotiations with the new Wiosna party about an electoral alliance, but they failed.

Ruch Prawdziwa Europe - Europe Christi

After the planned alliance with the Prawica RP failed and registration was only successful in one constituency, the party decided not to participate.

Further election committees

The following committees were not registered in any of the constituencies:
