Polish Parliament

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Polish parliament consists of two chambers , the Sejm (lower house) and the Senate (upper house).

The presidents of parliament bear the title of marshal in the Polish parliament : Sejmmarschall and Senate Marshal.

Legislative period

The dissolution of the Sejm always results in the simultaneous termination of the Senate's electoral term. Although the standard length of the legislative period for the two chambers of four years is identical, the method of counting the electoral periods is not uniform. Since its reintroduction in 1989, the first electoral term of the Senate lasted simultaneously with the 10th electoral term of the Sejm. With the first completely free elections in 1991, the Sejm electoral terms were counted anew, while the second electoral term began for the Senate. Consequently, a Sejm in the nth electoral term always corresponds to a senate in the (n + 1) th electoral term.
