Unia Lewicy (Union of the Left - UL) - a coalition of Polish left parties founded on December 5, 2004 (under the name Unia Lewicy ). On March 20, 2005 it was decided to found a political party. At the founding party congress on May 7, 2005, it was transformed into the Unia Lewicy III RP (Union of the Left of the Third Republic) (judicial registration on June 15, 2005). Its chairman was Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka (May 7 - December 10, 2005). Since December 10, 2005, Piotr Musiał has been the chairman of the party. The new party was not joined by senior officials from other organizations that originally formed the UL coalition.

The party has set itself the goal of forming a social movement that should represent a left alternative to Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej (League of Democratic Left - SLD) and Socjaldemokracja Polska (Social Democracy of Poland - SdPl).

In 2005, she founded the informal "Coalition Against the ( right-wing extremist ) Młodzieżżłska (All-Polish Youth)" with some left-wing organizations such as the Pracownicza Demokracja (Workers' Democracy ), the Młodzi Socjaliści (Young Socialists), and the election campaign staff of Prof. Maria Szyszkowska .

In August 2005, the UL and the SLD agreed on the launch of the UL candidates for the Sejm election campaign from the SLD list. The list of the SLD won 1,335,257 votes (11.31% at the state level), so Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka acquired the only mandate for the UL. She later resigned from the UL and became a member of the Sejm faction of the SLD. The launch of UL's candidates off the SLD list has been sharply criticized by other radical left organizations.

In the local elections on November 12, 2006, UL supported Wanda Nowicka , who was nominated by the Polska Partia Pracy as a candidate for the office of President of Warsaw .

In the elections for the Sejm 2007 , the candidates of the Unia Lewicy started mainly from the list of the PPP (one candidate was on the list of Lewica i Demokraci (Left and Democrats - LiD)), which could not move into the Sejm.
