Government formation
Although the PiS held coalition talks with the PO before the election , after the election it turned mainly to the nationalist and populist parties Samoobrona and LPR . It temporarily formed a minority government under the leadership of Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz . Jarosław Kaczyński resigned as party leader from the post of prime minister in order not to endanger the chances of his twin brother Lech in the upcoming presidential election . The twin brothers promised not to hold the highest state offices together, as this met with great skepticism among the population. In May 2006, the PiS finally formed a right-wing national coalition with the two parties Samoobrona and LPR. Just two months later, Marcinkiewicz resigned as prime minister, clearing the place for Jarosław Kaczyński, who took over the office despite the victory of his twin brother Lech, who had been president since December 2005, and contrary to previous promises.
