Parliamentary elections in Poland in 1989
The parliamentary elections in Poland in 1989 took place on June 4th and 18th, 1989. In the elections, the members of the Polish parliament were newly elected in two chambers (in the Sejm and in the re-established Senate ), for the first time in the People's Republic of Poland after the Second World War in partially free elections.
Electoral system
According to the key agreed during the round table negotiations, the seats in the Sejm were 65 percent for the Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza (PVAP) and its bloc parties, 35 percent (161 of 460 seats) for free elections (for so-called "independent" candidates ) while the Senate election was unrestricted.
Election result
All of the 161 freely chosen seats in the Sejm were won by candidates from the Solidarność Citizens' Committee , the political organization of the Solidarność trade union , which also won 99 of the 100 possible seats in the Senate. Of the total of 261 candidates of the “Solidarność Citizens' Committee” (only one candidate per freely assigned mandate), only one Senate candidate was not elected.
