Referendum in Poland on joining the European Union

Results of the referendum by voivodship (% yes-votes). Although the supporters of membership had a majority in all voivodships, there is (as in other elections) a remarkable east-west division of the country into a pro-European west and a much more eurosceptic east.

The referendum in Poland on accession to the European Union was on 7 and 8 June 2003 Poland held. With a turnout of 58.85%, 77.45% of the voters voted for Poland's accession to the European Community .

Background and result

At the meeting of the European Council in Luxembourg in 1997, it was decided to start accession negotiations with Poland and 9 other Eastern and Southern European countries. These accession negotiations were held on 12./13. Completed December 2002. On April 16, 2003, the Accession Treaty , which came into force on May 1, 2004 , was signed in Athens by the EU and the 10 candidate countries. The Polish government organized a referendum on the question of membership. The question asked was:

Czy wyraża Pan / Pani zgodę na przystąpienie Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej do Unii Europejskiej?

"Do you agree to the accession of the Republic of Poland to the European Union?"

With a turnout of 58.85% (17,586,215 voters), 77.45% (13,516,612) voted "Yes" and 22.55% (3,936,012) voted "No". The referendum was thus approved.
