The 2010 presidential election in Poland took place on June 20, 2010, the necessary run-off election took place on July 4, 2010. Bronisław Komorowski emerged as the winner.

The original plan was to hold the election in autumn 2010. By the death of President Lech Kaczynski in the plane crash near Smolensk 10 April 2010 in accordance with Article 131 took over the Polish Constitution of the Sejm Bronislaw Komorowski , the official business Kaczyńskis preliminary. According to Article 128, he had to announce the election date within 14 days, and a new election of the president took place within a period of 60 days after the announcement.
On April 21, 2010, Komorowski announced June 20, 2010 as the date. A possible second ballot was scheduled for July 4, 2010.

Candidates
Two candidates in the elections scheduled for the fall died in the crash near Smolensk. This was on the one hand the incumbent Lech Kaczyński from Prawo i Sprawiedliwość ( Law and Justice ) and Jerzy Szmajdziński from Sojusz Lewicy Demokratieycznej ( Federation of the Democratic Left ). Lech Kaczyński had not yet officially announced his election, but it was assumed that he would be a candidate.
Admitted candidates
The following candidates were eligible for election because they had submitted at least 100,000 supporters' signatures to the election commission on May 6, 2010:
- Marek Jurek (* 1960), 2005-2007 Sejm Marshal
- Jarosław Kaczyński (* 1949), 2006-2007 Prime Minister of Poland
- Bronisław Komorowski (* 1952), Sejm Marshal since 2007, Managing President of Poland since April 2010
- Janusz Korwin-Mikke (* 1942), founder of the Wolność i Praworządność ( Freedom and Rule of Law ) party
- Andrzej Lepper (1954–2011), 2006–2007 Minister of Agriculture of Poland
- Kornel Morawiecki (1941–2019), founder and head of Solidarność Walcząca ( Fighting Solidarity )
- Grzegorz Napieralski (* 1974), since 2008 chairman of Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej ( Federation of the Democratic Left )
- Andrzej Olechowski (* 1947), 1993–1995 Foreign Minister of Poland, co-founder of Platforma Obywatelska ( Citizens' Platform )
- Waldemar Pawlak (* 1959), Minister of Economy of Poland since November 2007
- Bogusław Ziętek (* 1964), since 2005 chairman of the Polska Partia Pracy ( Polish Labor Party )
Andrzej Lepper was briefly rejected as a candidate by the electoral commission on the grounds that he had a criminal record. He was sentenced to six months in prison in 2005. The excerpt from the criminal records available to the electoral commission was not up-to-date and the conviction had been overturned by the Polish Supreme Court. Therefore, he was admitted again the following day.
Candidates not admitted
The following candidates had successfully registered with the electoral commission as applicants on April 26, 2010, but could not raise the 100,000 votes required for the candidacy:

- Krzysztof Radosław Mazurski (* 1946), scientist, geographer
- Zdzisław Podkański (* 1949), member of the European Parliament

- Ludwik Wasiak , chairman of the Stronnictwo Narodowe ( National Party )
- Józef Franciszek Wójcik
As early as April 26, the electoral commission rejected:

- Bartłomiej Józef kurzja
- Paweł Pietrzyk
- Paweł Soroka (* 1953), Polish political scientist
- Waldemar Urbanowski
Election campaign
1st ballot
There was no TV duel between the two most important applicants, Kaczyński and Komorowski, until the first round of voting. During the election campaign, Kaczyński was forbidden to claim that Komorowski was trying to privatize the Polish healthcare system. An appeals court ordered Kaczyński to retract his testimony on two television channels.
2nd ballot
An electoral debate took place on June 27th and 30th and was broadcast by the three largest Polish TV channels - TVP , TVN and Polsat .
The first debate was fairly even, with a slight advantage for Komorowski. In a telephone poll by the GfK Polonia , however, 52 percent saw Komorowski and only 28 percent Kaczyński as the winner.
In the second debate, according to a GfK survey, 41 percent thought Komorowski, 37 percent Kaczyński was the winner, and 18 percent saw a balanced result.
Opinion polls
The most promising candidates were Bronisław Komorowski and Jarosław Kaczyński. In surveys at the beginning of May, Komorowski came to 45 to 50 percent, Kaczyński to 34 to 36 percent. In the last polls before the election, Komorowski got 44 to 42 percent of the vote, Kaczyński 29 to 35 percent.

In the June 20 election, Komorowski got 41.5 percent and Kaczynski 36.5 percent. This resulted in a runoff election on July 4, 2010.

2nd ballot
Bronisław Komorowski won the election with 53.01 percent of the vote, followed by Jarosław Kaczyński with 46.99 percent.
Above all, Kaczyński was able to win over the rural population, while most of the people in large cities and Poland abroad voted for Komorowski . Overall, the further west and north-west of Poland they lived, the more voters voted for Komorowski. The turnout was 55.31 percent. The Masovian Voivodeship had the highest voter turnout at 61.55 percent, and the lowest was 46.67 percent in the Opole Voivodeship .
Komorowski was sworn in before the National Assembly on August 6, 2010.
