Jerzy Andrzej Szmajdziński (born April 9, 1952 in Wroclaw ; † April 10, 2010 in Smolensk , Russia ) was a Polish politician, a member of the Sejm from 1985 to 1989 and again continuously since 1991 in the I., II., III., IV., V. and VI . Electoral term. He was Polish Minister of Defense from October 19, 2001 to October 31, 2005, and Deputy Marshal of the Sejm from November 6, 2007 .

Life

He closed one in 1975, studied economics at the Academy of Economics Wroclaw from. In 1973 he became a member of the Polish United Workers' Party ( PVAP ). From 1986 to 1990 he was a member of the Central Committee there . From 1984 on, he was specifically responsible for youth in the party. In 1989 he became chairman of the Central Committee.

After the dissolution of the PVAP in 1989, Szmajdziński became a member of the Socjaldemokracja Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej party ( SdRP - Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland ) and in 1991 won a seat in the Sejm . Since 1999 he was a member of the Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej ( SLD - Federation of the Democratic Left ). On October 19, 2001 he was appointed Secretary of Defense by Leszek Miller . In April 2004 he was appointed Minister of the Interior and Administration for two weeks, as Józef Oleksy, who had been responsible for this department up to that point, was elected Marshal of the Sejm . He kept his post as Defense Minister in both Marek Belka's governments . After the defeat of the SLD in the parliamentary elections on September 25, 2005 , Szmajdzinski had to give up his ministerial post. Jerzy Szmajdziński was also a member of Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz's election committee for the 2005 presidential elections .

In the parliamentary elections of 2007 he was re-elected from the list of the electoral alliance of the Left and Democrats (Lewica i Demokraci, LiD) in the Legnica electoral district in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship with 42,724 votes to the Sejm and was deputy marshal of the Sejm since November 6, 2007 .

On April 22, 2008 Szmajdziński became a member of the newly formed Lewica faction . From June 1st, 2008 until his death he was deputy chairman of the SLD . In December 2009 he was named SLD's presidential candidate for the 2010 Polish presidential elections.

On April 10, 2010, Szmajdziński was part of a Polish delegation headed by President Lech Kaczyński , who was to travel to the memorial in Russia on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre . However, in a plane crash of the delegation near the Smolensk-Nord military airfield , he was killed along with other high-ranking representatives of Poland.

Posthumously Szmajdziński was awarded the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order Polonia Restituta (Krzyż Komandorski z Gwiazdą Orderu Odrodzenia Polski) on April 16, 2010 .
