Danuta Maria Hübner (born April 8, 1948 in Nisko , Poland ) is a Polish economist, politician of the liberal-conservative Civic Platform (PO) and a member of the European Parliament since 2009 . Previously, she was EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, among other things .

Life

In 1971 Danuta Huebner received her diploma in economics from the Warsaw University of Economics . Afterwards she was a scholarship holder and visiting scholar at foreign universities several times. In 1974 she received her doctorate, in 1980 she received her habilitation . She has been a professor of economics since 1992 . She is married and has two daughters.

Political career

From 1970 to 1987 Danuta Hübner was a member of the communist Polish United Workers' Party , but did not actually become politically active until 1994. From 1994 to 1996 she was State Secretary in the Polish Ministry of Industry. In 1997 she became head of the office of the Polish President and held this office until 1998. From 1998 to 2001 she was Deputy Executive Secretary in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. From 2001 to 2003 she was State Secretary in the Polish Foreign Ministry, and from 2003 to 2004 she was Minister for European Affairs herself.

From the time Poland joined the European Union on May 1, 2004, Danuta Hübner was European Trade Commissioner together with the French Pascal Lamy . On October 18, 2004, she became responsible for regional policy in the new commission . In the 2009 European elections she was elected to the European Parliament with 311,018 votes and therefore had to resign from her commission office; her successor was her compatriot Paweł Samecki . In parliament, however, she remained active in the same policy area and was elected chairman of the regional development committee. In September 2010 she was involved in the establishment of the so-called Spinelli Group , which advocates European federalism . She was re-elected in the 2014 European elections and has since been chair of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs .
