Pascal Lamy
Pascal Lamy [ pasˈkal laˈmi ] (born April 8, 1947 in Levallois-Perret near Paris ) is a French politician . Lamy was EU Commissioner for Foreign Trade from 1999 to 2004 . From September 2005 to August 2013 he was Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Life
Pascal Lamy was born to Jacques Lamy and Denise Dujardin. On June 2, 1972, he married the lawyer Geneviève Luchaire. He has three sons (Julien, David and Quentin).
education
After attending the Lycée Carnot in Paris, he studied law and political science at the École des hautes études commerciales de Paris (HEC), the renowned Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po Paris) and from January 1973 to May 1975 administrative sciences at the ENA .
Career
In 1969 he joined the Parti Socialiste . After several positions in the public service (in the financial and economic sector) he became an advisor (1982 deputy director) to the finance and economic minister Jacques Delors . Finally, from 1983 to 1984 he was Deputy Director in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy , and his representative at the G7. His career in European politics began in 1985; he was director in the cabinet of Commission President Jacques Delors until April 1994.
From November 1994 to 1999 he worked at the French bank Crédit Lyonnais , most recently as general manager, in order to rebuild and privatize it.
From 1999 to 2004 he returned to European politics. Lamy served as trade commissioner under Commission President Romano Prodi .
On May 26, 2005, at the World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting in Geneva , Lamy was elected to succeed Supachai Panitchpakdi as Director General of this organization for four years and took up this post in September 2005. In 2009 he took up a second four-year term. In 2013 he was replaced by Roberto Azevêdo .
He also worked in April 1995 in the office of the organization European Movement International , in 1999 for the French elite association “Le siècle” and as president of the think tank “ Notre Europe ” and as a professor at Sciences Po Paris. Lamy is a consultant for the transatlantic think tank European Horizons .
