Pavel Telička

Pavel Telička [ ˈpavɛl ˈtɛlitʃka ] (born August 24, 1965 in Washington, DC , USA ) is a Czech politician of the HLAS party and former EU commissioner.

Life

Telička graduated from Charles University in Prague in 1986 with a law degree .

He immediately went to the Foreign Ministry of what was then Czechoslovakia , where he dealt with international law until 1990. Since 1990 he has mainly been concerned with European unification. Between 1991 and 1995 he was at the Czechoslovak and later the Czech representation to the European Union .

From 1995 Telička was head of various departments in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in 1998 became Deputy Foreign Minister. In this position he was chief negotiator in the accession negotiations between the Czech Republic and the EU. In 1999 he became State Secretary for European Affairs. In 2002 Telička became Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the European Communities.

In February 2004 he was appointed EU Commissioner. He was inducted into office on May 1st and was responsible for consumer protection with David Byrne . As he was no longer serving in the new commission, his term of office ended in November 2004.

In August 2013 he joined the ANO 2011 party . In the 2014 European elections , he was elected to the European Parliament for five years .

In October 2017 he left the ANO party in 2011.

In February 2019, he announced that he would found a new political party called HLAS, with which he would run in the 2019 European elections ; however, the party did not achieve the necessary number of votes to enter parliament. In June 2019 he was elected first chairman of the HLAS party.

Telička has also made a name for himself as a speaker on European affairs. He also works on social projects.

Pavel Telička is married and has a son and a daughter.
