Jacques Barrot [ ʒak baˈʀo ] (born February 3, 1937 in Yssingeaux ; † December 3, 2014 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French politician and EU Commissioner for Justice and Vice President of the EU Commission.

Political career in France

Barrot was a lawyer and sociologist . From 1976 to 1986 he was a member of the Auvergne regional parliament . From 1989 to 2001 he was mayor of Yssingeaux. From 1976 to 2004 he was also Chairman of the Council of the Haute-Loire Department .

Jacques Barrot was a member of the French National Assembly for the Haute-Loire department from 1967 to 2004 . From 1986 to 1988 he was chairman of the culture committee, from 1993 to 1995 head of the finance committee.

From 1974 to 1981 and from 1995 to 1997 he was a member of the French government. From 1974 to 1978 as Minister for Housing, 1977 to 1978 also for spatial planning. From 1978 to 1979 for trade and craft and from 1979 to 1981 for health and social insurance. From 1995 to 1997 he was responsible for labor and social affairs.

Barrot was secretary general of the Center des démocrates sociaux (CDS) for several years . From 1991 to 1993 Barrot was group leader of the Union du center in the National Assembly and then until 1995 deputy group chairman of the Union pour la démocratie française (UDF). From 2002 to 2004 he was chairman of the Union-pour-un-mouvement-populaire group.

In 2000 he was sentenced by a French court to a suspended sentence of eight months for embezzling £ 2 million of state funds in favor of his party.

Political career in the European Union

In April 2004 he succeeded Michel Barnier as EU Commissioner for Regional Policy . In the Commission under Barroso he was Vice-President since November 2004 and was initially responsible for transport . For this he received the European Railway Award in 2013 . From May 2008 to February 2010 he was Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security . The publication of an earlier conviction of Barrot for embezzling party funds by Nigel Farage caused a stir .

Private life

Jacques Barrot was married and had three children.
