Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security
The Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security was a portfolio in the European Commission . It has existed since the Santer Commission took office in 1995, after the European Union was given powers in the field of home affairs and justice through the Maastricht Treaty . When the Barroso II Commission took office at the beginning of 2010, the office was divided into two separate portfolios, namely a Commissioner for Justice and Fundamental Rights and a Commissioner for Home Affairs . These positions were taken over by Viviane Reding and Cecilia Malmström .
